VMware and AWS announced a strategic partnership that brings the two leaders in Enterprise IT together to deliver a vSphere-based cloud service running on AWS. This service will make it easier for customers to run any application, using a set of familiar software and tools, in a consistent hybrid cloud environment. “Best of both Worlds for our customer” VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger said in his General session speech today at VMworld. A lot of customers who are running a VMware stack on the enterprise are looking or already moved some of their workload to AWS. VMware Cloud on Amazon will allow customers to advantage of VMware support as well the amazon services. The biggest advantage to me would be Elastic DRS which will automatically add new ESXi hosts to a cluster if resources are low. Elastic DRS will also automatically add hosts when one of the hosts part of a cluster fails. This new platform also allows to vMotion virtual machines between two AWS datacenters. There is some skepticism out there as some analyst are putting across the point that although this does help enterprises in the cloud journey, it doesn’t enable digital transformation (App modernization).
