Migrating VMware VM’s to Hyper-v V3

Written by Mo Elamin. Posted in Blog, Microsoft, VMWare

All lot of customers out there are changing their virtualisation Platforms and moving from VMware to hyper-v mainly because of the massive improvements in windows Server 2012 Hyper-v. Migrating process can be very tricky, but there are tools out there that can help prepare and plan for migration, such as Microsoft Assessment and Planning toolkit.

Map is an agentless inventory and assessment tool that provide you with that information that you need to do a right sizing of your new Hyper-V environment. Currently version 8.5 is in beta and you can join this beta via Microsoft Connect. You can download version 8.0 over here.

Once you have completed the assessment and planned your migration project, you can start thinking about tools you can use to help you with actual migration

  • System Center Virtual Machine Manager
  • Microsoft® Virtual Machine Converter Plug-in for VMware vSphere Client
  • Microsoft Virtual Machine Converter
  • Netapp Shift

System Center Virtual Machine Manager

You can use SCVMM to convert the virtual machines with the P2V or V2V wizard. So it’s up to you if you treat the source VM as a physical machine or a virtual machine. The result is the same. One point of attention when you use SCVMM is that you manually have to remove the VMware tools before you start the conversion. No additional tools or scripts are needed. Note that you cannot perform a P2V or V2V migration while the machine remains online.

Microsoft® Virtual Machine Converter Plug-in for VMware vSphere Client Beta

The Microsoft Virtual Machine Converter (MVMC) Plug-in for VMware vSphere Client is a Microsoft-supported that allows you to convert VMware-based virtual machines to Microsoft Hyper-V®-based virtual machines from vSphere Client. This plug-in extends vSphere Client to facilitate conversions from a virtual machine context menu and without changing configurations on the source VMware host. It is built upon Microsoft Virtual Machine Converter Solution Accelerator.

Microsoft has announced that a new beta version of its Microsoft Virtual Machine Converter Plug-in for VMware vSphere Client version 1.0 is now available on Microsoft Connect.

Microsoft Virtual Machine Converter

The Microsoft® Virtual Machine Converter (MVMC) Solution Accelerator is a solution which allows you to convert VMware-based virtual machines and disks to Hyper-V®-based virtual machines and disks. The MVMC solution can perform full conversions of VMware-based virtual machines as well as conversions of VMware-based virtual hard disks to Hyper-V-based virtual hard disks (VHD).

This guide is intended for the enterprise customer in an information technology (IT) role, such as the IT decision maker (ITDM), IT pro, or IT implementer. It provides an overview of MVMC features and functionality, as well as information about how to install and use the solution. You can download this tool here.

Netapp Shift

Migrating virtual machines can take some hours/ days because of the amount of data that is involved. Data needs to be copied from the source VMDK to a destination VHD(x). If you’re a Netapp customer however NetApp you can save time and money when copy data across. With a tool called NetApp Shift, Netapp makes it possible to migrate from VMware to Hyper-V without migrating any data! Shift converts a VMDK to VHD in a split of seconds.
